Early 20th Century | Folk Art / Brutalist Style
A striking pair of hand-carved solid wood rustic chairs, likely Central European, dating to the early 20th century (circa 1920–1950).
These sculptural chairs feature deeply carved surfaces, expressive hand-tool marks, and distinctive clover-shaped cut-outs to the backrest and seat ends. The bold tripod-style construction and low seat height give them a strong Brutalist and Alpine folk character.
Often referred to as “birthing chairs” or ceremonial stools in historical context, pieces of this form were used in traditional rural interiors and later appreciated as decorative folk art furniture.
Dimensions (per chair):
Width: 60 cm
Depth: 47 cm
Height: 74 cm
Seat Height: 35 cm
Condition:
Both chairs are structurally solid and stable.
One chair has been reinforced at the seat-to-back connection. The repair is secure and professionally glued. The glue line remains slightly visible upon close inspection but blends naturally with the wood grain and does not affect stability.
Minor surface wear, small imperfections, and age-related marks are present, consistent with antique handcrafted furniture. These contribute to the authentic rustic character.
